You do not rank in a Google AI Overview. You get a passage from your page quoted inside one, with a link back to you. That distinction sounds pedantic. It quietly changes almost everything about how you should work.
An AI Overview is the block of AI-written text that sits at the very top of a lot of Google results now, above the ordinary blue links. It answers the question in a few sentences and cites a handful of sources. Your job is not to be “number one” for the query. Your job is to write the sentence Google decides to lift. This guide covers how those overviews are built, what actually gets cited, and the order to do the work in. What does “ranking” in AI Overviews actually mean?
You are not competing for a position on the page, you are competing to have a specific passage of your content extracted and quoted. The unit of optimisation shrinks from the whole page to the paragraph.
Classic SEO rewards a page that earns a high position and, ideally, a click. AI Overviews reward a passage that answers a question so cleanly that Google’s model is happy to put its name next to it. A page can rank beautifully and never get cited, because no single chunk of it answers the question in a liftable form. A different page can sit lower down and get cited three times, because it is written in tidy, self-contained answers.
So when people ask how to “rank” in AI Overviews, the honest reframe is this: how do you get your passages cited? Everything below answers that.
What are AI Overviews, and how often do they show up?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries at the top of Google results, and by early 2026 they appear on roughly 48% of searches, up sharply from around 13% a year earlier. That figure varies by study and by query type, with estimates running from about 30% to 60%, but the direction of travel is not in doubt: they are becoming the default, not the exception (AI Overviews statistics roundup, 2026).
They show up most on informational and question-shaped searches (“how”, “what”, “best way to”, “vs”) and least on obvious navigational or transactional ones. If your audience asks Google questions before they buy, they are already meeting overviews on the way to you.
Here is the tension you have to hold from the start. Overviews are winning attention, but they also keep people on Google. Independent analysis found that fewer than one in three Google searches now ends in a click to the open web (SparkToro, 2026). The reader gets their answer, sees your brand cited, and often stops. That is the zero-click effect, and it means the value of a citation is partly the click and partly the visibility itself. We will come back to what to do about that.
How does Google build an AI Overview?
Google’s Gemini model drafts the answer, then elevates supporting passages from pages already in Google’s index, favouring content that surfaces consistently across a spread of related sub-queries. It is grounded generation, not free invention. The model is told to answer using retrieved web content and to cite it.
Three moving parts matter to you:
- The draft. Gemini writes a short answer to the query, constrained by what Google’s ranking and quality systems already consider trustworthy for that topic. Google is explicit that these features are “rooted in Google’s core Search ranking and quality systems”, which is why standard SEO still does the heavy lifting (Google Search Central).
- The corroboration. For each claim, Google looks for pages that support it and pulls quotable passages to cite. Content that states facts plainly, with clear attribution, is easier to corroborate than content that buries the point.
- Query fan-out. This is the 2026 mechanic most people miss. Google does not just answer the query you typed. It quietly breaks it into several related sub-questions, runs them, and builds the overview from the pages that keep appearing across the whole set. A Search Engine Land study of 10,000 keywords found that pages ranking for those fan-out queries were 161% more likely to be cited than pages ranking only for the main term (Search Engine Land, 2026).
Fan-out explains a finding that surprises a lot of people: the share of AI Overview citations that also rank in Google’s top ten fell from about 76% in mid-2025 to roughly 38% by early 2026 (Search Engine Journal, 2026). Ranking on page one still helps enormously. It is no longer the whole game.
What actually gets your passage cited?
Six things decide it, and they stack: strong organic visibility, a direct passage-level answer, genuine intent match, freshness, quotable and structured content, and credible E-E-A-T signals. No single one is a switch you flip. Together they make your page the easy, safe choice.
- Existing organic visibility. Google grounds overviews in its index, so pages it already ranks are the pool it draws from. You rarely get cited for a query you are invisible for.
- Passage-level answers. The cite-worthy chunk is almost always a short, self-contained answer near the top of a section. If the reader has to assemble the answer from three scattered paragraphs, the model will find someone who did the assembling for them.
- Intent match. The passage has to answer the actual question, not a nearby one. “What it costs” and “why it matters” are different queries and want different blocks.
- Freshness. Across AI engines, the majority of cited pages have been updated within the last year. Google’s overviews are less recency-hungry than some others, with a meaningful share of citations still going to same-year content, so a visible “last updated” and real revisions help without turning into a news race (citation pattern study, 2026).
- Quotable, structured content. Definitions, short lists, comparison tables, and step sequences are easy to lift. Walls of text are not.
- E-E-A-T signals. First-hand experience, named authors with real credentials, citations to primary sources, and a site with topical depth all lower the model’s risk in quoting you. The AI Overview optimisation playbook, in order
Do these five things in sequence. The order matters, because a perfect answer block on a page nobody ranks is a tree falling in an empty forest.
1. Earn strong organic visibility first
You cannot skip the boring part. Google can only cite pages it has indexed and considers eligible for snippets, and it disproportionately pulls from content it already trusts. That means the ordinary work still comes first: crawlable pages, sensible internal linking, good page experience, and content that deserves to rank. 2. Engineer passage-level answer blocks
This is the part most sites get wrong. Under a clear, question-shaped heading, answer the question directly in roughly 40 to 60 words, in plain declarative sentences, before you expand. Lead with the answer, then add the nuance, the caveats, and the detail underneath. Write so a stranger could copy that one paragraph, paste it into a chat, and it would still make sense with no surrounding context. 3. Add structured data and clean structure
Google is clear that no special schema is required and there is no AI-specific file or markup that unlocks overviews (Google’s AI optimisation guide). So treat structured data as hygiene, not a trick. FAQ, Article, and Product schema help Google understand your page and can earn rich results, which is worth having. The bigger win is HTML structure: one logical heading hierarchy, real lists and tables instead of styled paragraphs, and content available as text rather than trapped in images or scripts. Clean structure is what makes a passage easy to extract.
4. Keep content current
Set a review cadence for your priority pages and actually revise them, rather than nudging a date. Refresh the statistics, add the new sub-question people started asking, remove what has gone stale, and note genuine updates. This matters for two reasons: overviews lean towards content that has been maintained, and query fan-out keeps inventing new sub-questions you will want to cover. 5. Cover the follow-up questions in the fan-out
Because Google answers a cluster of sub-questions, not just one, breadth is now a citation strategy. Map the obvious follow-ups around your core topic (“how much”, “how long”, “is it worth it”, “what about X”) and answer each in its own passage block, on the same page or across a tight cluster of linked pages. The aim is to be the source that keeps showing up whichever way Google splits the query. This is the practical heart of generative engine optimisation: stop writing one page for one keyword, and start covering a question and everything next to it.
What do AI Overviews do to your clicks, and what should you do about it?
They reduce clicks on informational queries, sometimes heavily, so the response is to be the cited brand, win the queries that still convert, and measure differently. Ahrefs found that the presence of an AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page on affected keywords (Ahrefs, 2026). That is a real number and worth taking seriously.
Panicking about it is not a strategy. Three responses are:
- Be the cited brand. If the reader does not click, the next best thing is seeing your name as the answer’s source. Repeated citations build familiarity, and familiarity is what makes someone search your brand later or pick you from a shortlist. Visibility without a click still has value.
- Win the queries that still send clicks and money. Overviews hit “what is” and “how does” hardest. Commercial and comparison queries, local intent, and bottom-of-funnel searches still drive clicks, because people want to act, not just read. Weight your effort towards the searches where a click is worth something.

The mindset shift is the point. A cited overview that ends in no click is not a failure if it built demand you capture later. It is a different kind of result, and it needs a different scorecard.
How do you measure your AI Overview presence?
You stop measuring only clicks and start measuring citation presence, cited-brand demand, and downstream conversions, because the old dashboard now hides half the story. Ahrefs calls the split the “great decoupling”: impressions climb while clicks flatten or fall, because people see you without visiting (Ahrefs, 2026). If clicks are your only metric, that looks like decline when it might be growth.
A workable measurement stack:
- Manual spot checks. Search your priority questions from a clean browser and record which overviews appear, whether you are cited, and who else is. Slow, but it is ground truth and it tells you exactly what to fix.
