Key takeaways
- Google AI Mode is a distinct conversational search surface, separate from AI Overviews. Here is what it changes for UK businesses, and how to get cited.
- AI Mode is a full conversational search experience you open on purpose, not the summary box that appears automatically above your results. They are two separate surfaces.
- Query fan-out is the engine underneath it: Google splits one question into many hidden sub-questions, so breadth across a topic beats a single keyword-perfect page.
- AI Mode has been live in the UK since July 2025 and passed a billion monthly users by mid-2026, so this is already how a lot of your customers search.
- You cannot buy your way in. You earn citations with retrievable, answer-shaped content that covers the whole question, backed by a clear, consistent business identity.
Google AI Mode is a separate, conversational way to search Google, where you ask a question in a chat-style tab and get one synthesised answer with links, instead of a page of blue links. It is not the same thing as an AI Overview, the summary that appears automatically at the top of ordinary results. AI Mode is a full search experience you choose to open, built for longer, multi-step questions. For a UK business the practical point is simple: there is now a second AI surface on Google, it works differently from the first, and being found in it takes deliberate work.
This guide covers what AI Mode is, how it differs from AI Overviews, the query fan-out that drives it, where the UK stands, and how to get cited.
What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is Google’s conversational search experience: a dedicated tab, powered by a custom version of Gemini, that answers complex questions in full and lets you keep the conversation going with follow-ups. Google calls it its “most powerful AI search”, with advanced reasoning, multimodal input, and the ability to go further through follow-up questions and links out to the web (Google, 2025).
The experience feels closer to a chatbot than to a results page. You type or speak a question, often a long and specific one, and Google returns a single written answer with links, then invites you to refine it, so the session builds on itself.
Two things follow. People ask AI Mode harder questions than they type into a search box, and your page can be doing the work behind an answer without the person ever seeing a classic result for you.
How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?
An AI Overview is pushed to you automatically above normal results; AI Mode is a separate surface you pull up on purpose, and it goes deeper, holds a conversation, and treats its links differently. They share plumbing, including the same custom Gemini model, but they are two distinct places to be found that reward slightly different things.
The cleanest way to hold the distinction is automatic versus chosen. An AI Overview appears on its own for queries Google thinks suit it. AI Mode is a deliberate choice: the user opens the tab to explore, compare or work through something in steps, with follow-up questions supported in the same session (Evertune, 2026). AI Overviews answer and stop; AI Mode answers and asks what is next.
Here is how the three surfaces compare:
| Classic results | AI Overview | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it appears | Ten blue links | Summary pushed above results automatically | Separate tab the user opens |
| Best for | A page to visit | A quick fact or summary | Long, multi-step, exploratory questions |
| Interaction | One query, one page | One query, one summary | A conversation with follow-ups |
| What you win | A ranking and a click | A cited passage in the summary | A cited source across the fan-out |
| Links | Listed by position | A handful of citations | Tracked individually, not by rank position |
The summary box has its own playbook, which we cover in how to rank in Google AI Overviews. This guide stays on AI Mode, because the conversational surface behaves differently enough to need its own treatment.
What is query fan-out, and why does it matter?
Query fan-out is the mechanic underneath AI Mode: Google takes your one question, quietly breaks it into many related sub-questions, runs them at once, and builds the answer from the pages that keep showing up across the whole set. Google describes it as “breaking down your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously on your behalf”, which lets Search reach further into the web than one query would (Google, 2025).
A worked example makes it concrete. Someone asks AI Mode for the best marketing support for a growing Leicester shop. Rather than running that one phrase, Google fans it out into the questions behind it: what a small retailer needs, who serves local businesses, what good results look like, what it costs, what other owners say. It gathers passages for each, then writes one answer, and the links it brings together behave like individual results rather than inheriting a single ranking position.
That changes the maths of being found. Fan-out rewards breadth: a site that answers the main question plus the cluster of sub-questions around it gives Google many chances to pull something from you, while a single keyword-perfect page gives it one. This is the same principle behind answer engine optimisation: cover a whole question and everything next to it, not one page for one term.
Where does the UK stand?
AI Mode has been available in the UK since late July 2025 and has grown fast since, so this is not a future trend to prepare for; it is live and already shaping how your customers search. Google began rolling it out to UK users on 28 July 2025, after its earlier launch in the United States (9to5Google, 2025).
Adoption has moved quickly. Google used its I/O 2026 keynote to say AI Mode had passed a billion monthly users worldwide, with queries more than doubling every quarter since launch (Digital Applied, 2026). Those questions also tend to be longer and more detailed than classic searches, often two or three times the length (9to5Google, 2025), which tells you people are using it for the considered, comparison-heavy decisions that matter most to a growing business.
For a UK SMB the takeaway is plain. A meaningful share of the people who once found you through blue links now put their question to AI Mode instead, and if your content is not retrievable and answer-shaped, you are absent from that conversation.
What does AI Mode change about being found?
It moves the prize from ranking a page to being the source an answer is built from, and because of fan-out, breadth and clarity beat a single optimised page. The fundamentals of good SEO still apply, since AI Mode draws on Google’s index. What it rewards on top is covering a whole cluster of related questions rather than one page for one term, writing in clean passages a machine can lift, and being easy to reach and identify. This is answer engine work, and it pays off across every assistant your buyers use, not only AI Mode. We run these moves inside our growth engagements, one at a time.
How do you get cited in Google AI Mode?
You cannot pay for it or submit a form, so you earn it the steady way: retrievable, answer-shaped content that covers the whole question, backed by a clear, consistent business identity. There is no ranking to buy and no special markup that triggers a citation. A sensible order of work:
- Open the door to crawlers. Confirm your robots.txt and any bot protection let Google and the main AI crawlers reach your pages. This is the most common own goal we find.
- Map the fan-out. For each priority topic, list the sub-questions a customer would ask, and make sure each has a clear, direct answer on your site.
- Write passage-first. Under a question-shaped heading, answer in a couple of plain sentences before you expand, so a single block can be lifted and still make sense alone.
- Tidy your entity. Keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere, and state the basic facts about your business in words, not only graphics.
- Measure presence, not just clicks. Watch branded search, direct traffic and assisted conversions, and spot-check your key questions in AI Mode to see whether you are named.
Most of this strengthens your ordinary search performance at the same time. The deeper version lives in our answer engine optimisation guide.
Where should you start?
Pick the ten questions a good customer would ask Google about what you do, check whether AI Mode names you, then fix the gaps closest to a buying decision first. That single exercise tends to be a wake-up call, and it points you at the work that matters rather than guesswork.
From there it is a loop you keep running, because the questions keep multiplying and the answers keep being rewritten. That is how we work with clients too. TSF runs scoped monthly engagements with weekly updates and no lock-in, so you can watch your presence in AI answers move before committing to anything bigger. If you want an honest read on where you stand in AI Mode today and what to fix first, book a free growth review and we will walk you through it, or just get in touch.
